Slut Shaming Women

2012 August 9

By Diana May-Waldman,WWH/CJE- It’s no secret that I am not a fan of Sarah Palin. Most of the time when she opens up her mouth, I cringe. I don’t like her politics. I think she is a hypocrite as well, and I don’t feel she is an honest person. I think she should just step down and go about her life.

But, I have to say I was shocked, saddened and very angry over many of the comments that I saw pertaining to the posted photo.

Palin is wearing a a Superman T-shirt, a pair of black capri pants and some high heels.

She looks good. She’s a middle aged woman and she obviously takes care of herself. More power to her.

I couldn’t walk in those shoes, but I think she is rocking them out. And I personally love the T-shirt. I want one!

The remarks that I saw all over the Internet about this particular picture, well..shocked me.

Let me repeat. I am NOT a fan of Palin, but when I saw the picture, I pretty much just kept on going. I didn’t have an opinion on it and I didn’t see what other people saw. I really had no clue why that picture was showing up all over the Internet, until I saw some actual posts about it.

I saw several references to her picture calling her a “whore, slut, trailer trash.” I saw comments about her breasts being fake and her shoes being called, “come fuck me shoes.”

One man said, “She looks like a trailer park whore.. sorry,,”

(You’re not sorry. You’re ignorant.)

Another said, ” She just needs a wild liberal ‘Superman’, with a big gun, to show her some tuff love… anybody know one…?”

(Yeah, just what every woman needs. Fuck her good. Teach her something.)

I was flabbergasted.

I clicked on the picture again, thinking maybe I am not seeing something. Nope. Same picture.

I saw this comment, “Can you say Trailer-trash Queen? The Belle of the Single-wides? You can’t buy class. I guarantee you, she thinks she looks terrific. And she does appear to have a fabulous rack, albeit it’s probably supported by more rigging than the Brooklyn Bridge. I have always thought she’d pull a train for a blunt and half-a-rack of PBR”

(I can’t even begin to address the amount of ignorance in that statement. It speaks for itself.)

I am convinced that people say things like this to dehumanize a person. Strip them down to nothing. And for women, it is even worse. Why is this okay?

I looked at the picture one more time. I didn’t see anything sexual about it. If she had worn flat sandals, would that be more appropriate? If she had a plain colored T-shirt on, would that make people happy? What kind of pants should she be wearing?

Why is it okay to shame this woman for the clothes she is wearing?

Terms like, slut, whore, trailer trash are designed to humiliate and a shame women (and men). But, right now, we’re talking about a woman.

Calling her a slut is societies way of putting her inside a specific bubble, casting her off, simply because you don’t like her and you think she is fair game.

And it appalls me that women are hopping on the train of misogynist thinking.

I don’t care for Palin’s politics and I think she doesn’t think before she speaks or acts, but if she was lying on the street, you damn well better believe, I am reaching my hand out to help her up. And I don’t give a fuck what she is wearing.

Calling her these names implies that she has no value as a human being or as a woman. She’s trash. Throw her away. Be done with her.

Really?

Once again we are distracted and derailed from the real issues.

And I am deeply sorry for my sisters who went along with the woman bashing on this picture. These words have been ingrained in us most of our lives. So much, in fact, that we accept them and wear them. We think if we own them, then they can’t hurt us.

And we know better.

The systemic misogyny in the USA never ceases to amaze me, not that Canada is much better. How can we have the audacity to point out the failings of the Taliban when we fail so miserably at being fair and equitable? Mainstream culture is pretty much contaminated with a male-centric bias and after making some progress, feminism is on the defensive again. Sigh.

I had a friend in high school that was teeny weeny, but had huge breasts. She wore very typical tops for the time, typically a size bigger then her actual size, just so the top would cover her properly. Needless to say, even the next size up was a little tighter in certain areas, and this did not go unnoticed by the other girls in my class.
This girls was funny, warm, and generous and all I would ever hear down the gossip mill was what a slut she was. Really? This came from girls who were much more promiscuous, but because the exact same shirt didn’t fit them as snugly, my friend was a slut. What is she supposed to do, wear a mumu?

Somewhere along the line big breasts became a sign of sluttiness, tight clothing as well. A woman’s words, mind, and personality no longer valid. I agree with you about it being a shame that Palin is skewered for her clothes. Groomed or poorly groomed, it is her politics that should take center stage. Just as the color of a man’s skin does not a President make. I am proud of Obama breaking down the white wall of the white house, but I am ready for an election where color, sexual orientation, religious choice, and gender are no longer relevant.

Palin ,wasnt ” groomed ” to be a politician . she comes from a working class back round . her dad was a teacher. to my knowledge she never lived in a ” trailer ” to make fun of her dialect and looks is hypocritical , childish, and disturbing . she fought AGAINST her own party and corruption to advance from a city mayor to governor . as governor her state enjoyed a surplus , something obama and the great spenders can learn from . her quotes have been twisted into lies that are believed ( she never said she can see russia from her front porch , it was a saturday nite live spoof ) . its no wonder average people wont run for office when you get this media then abiding citizenry to do this hatchet work on an average american mother . i guess people want what they say they dont . typical Rich , groomed , corrupt politicians , rather than someone who
sets out to make the country a better place .
