CJE Tuesday News BriefsU.S. begins transporting French troops, equipment to Mali

WS – War is peace ignorance is strength freedom is slavery. Got it?

(Reuters) – The United States has started transporting French soldiers and equipment to Mali as part of its logistical aid to French forces fighting Islamist militants in the north of the country, a U.S. official said on Tuesday.

Paris has launched a military campaign against Islamist fighters in Mali at the request of the Malian government, amid fears the vast desert country could become a launchpad for international attacks.

“We have started air lifting French army personnel and equipment to Bamako from Istres,” said Benjamin Benson, a spokesman for U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).

A Reuters camera crew on Tuesday saw a U.S.-flagged military transport aircraft taking off from the Istres air base in southern France. More…

Three volcanoes in Russia’s Kamchatka continue to send steam and ash into the air while lava flows down their slopes. Volcanic activity on the peninsula has dramatically intensified. Aviation authorities issued an orange security level in the area.
The volcanoes Shiveluch, Kizimen and Plosky Talbachek are erupting in different parts of the peninsula simultaneously, causing dozens of local earthquakes, as the vibrations accompanying the eruptions of the giants continue to increase.
The biggest and most active is Shiveluch, Kamchatka’s northernmost volcano and 3,283 meters high. Over the last days it made several eruptions of gases, steam and ash, the highest of which reached the 4,900m above sea level. Unceasing earth tremors send avalanches down its slopes. Files show how church hid abuse reports

WS – CULT! Jesus Christ it’s a fucking cult!

LOS ANGELES – Retired Cardinal Roger Mahony and other top Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles officials maneuvered behind the scenes to shield molester priests, provide damage control for the church and keep parishioners in the dark, according to church personnel files.

The confidential records filed in a lawsuit against the archdiocese disclose how the church handled abuse allegations for decades and also reveal dissent from a top Mahony aide who criticized his superiors for covering up allegations of abuse rather than protecting children.

Notes inked by Mahony demonstrate he was disturbed about abuse and sent problem priests for treatment, but there also were lengthy delays or oversights in some cases. Mahony received psychological reports on some priests that mentioned the possibility of many other victims, for example, but there is no indication that he or other church leaders investigated further. CJE Tuesday News BriefsAntarctica takes out its frustration on the children of the 1%
Perhaps you have been feeling a little under the weather lately — hot, drippy, tired, not your usual self. As a rule, when you’re in this sort of condition, you don’t want visitors. Especially not spoiled visitors coming to gawk at your diminished state.

So you can imagine, maybe, how Antarctica felt when 90 students from the private and extremely chi-chi Hotchkiss School showed up on a luxury cruise liner with the heir to the Mars candy empire, intending to witness both its beauty and its hot, drippy global warming-induced sickness. You have to figure that Antarctica took one look at the cruise liner — full of sophomores, juniors, and seniors enjoying duck pâté, apple sorbet, beer-battered Mars Bars, walk-in closets, and hot tubs — and thought OH HELL NO. No wonder it decided to send a gigantic 30-foot wave at the ship, shattering the windows and making half the students fear for the lives and the other half jump for joy because now they had a Real, Challenging Experience to write about in their college essays. Flowers have long been used as traditional remedies, but they’re now being used to treat a conditions from depression and insomnia to cancer.
A third of new pharmaceuticals since 2008 originated or were inspired by natural products including flowers, says the Society of Chemical Industry.
What makes the chemicals in flowers so potent — even on something as complex as brain functions — is not clear.

CJE Tuesday News BriefsADHD Rises by Almost 25% in 1 Decade

WS –  After viewing the Presidents Inaugural Speech. Anyone with even moderate cognitive abilities could see that ADD is really on the rise among adults also.

– The number of children with ADHD is rising rapidly, according to a study of more than 840,000 California children.

While the research findings echo those of nationwide studies, the new study is stronger than some other studies, says researcher Darios Getahun, MD, PhD, a scientist at Kaiser Permanente Southern California, a large health plan.

“We relied on the clinical diagnosis of ADHD [by doctors] and medication prescriptions rather than teacher or parent report,” he says.

From 2001 to 2010, the rate of new cases of doctor-diagnosed ADHD rose from 2.5% to 3.1%, an increase of 24%.

“It’s an increase that warrants attention,” he says. Growing awareness of the condition is one reason for the rise, he speculates.

The study is published online in JAMA Pediatrics.

ADHD is one of the most common childhood neurobehavioral disorders, according to the CDC.

Children with ADHD have trouble paying attention or act impulsively, or both.

While the American Psychiatric Association estimates that 3% to 7% of school-aged children have ADHD, other studies have found higher rates.

ADHD Rising: Study Details

The Kaiser researchers looked at the health records of 842,830 children in the health plan. They ranged from 5 to 11 years old.

Of those, nearly 5%, or 39,200, had an ADHD diagnosis.

When they looked at the rates of a new diagnosis, they found the 24% rise, from 2.5% in 2001 to 3.1% in 2010. More…
