About a dozen protesters shut down a Wells Fargo Bank during the lunch hour Wednesday.
The protest was organized by Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE), which also staged demonstrations at branches in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland and San Diego.
The protests launched what ACCE calls a “campaign calling on Wells Fargo to enact a broad principal reduction program, reduce short sales and release data on borrowers helped by income and race.”
Bank officials in Richmond temporarily closed the doors at the 4300 Macdonald Ave. branch as the protesters marched in a circle and chanted, “Banks got bailed out, we got sold out.” Customers still used automated teller machines nearby. More…

Jury Finds Occupy Wall Street Protester Innocent After Video Contradicts Police Testimony

In the first jury trial stemming from an Occupy Wall Street protest, Michael Premo was found innocent of all charges yesterday after his lawyers presented video evidence directly contradicting the version of events offered by police and prosecutors.
Premo, an activist and community organizer who has in recent months been a central figure in the efforts of Occupy Sandy, was one of many hundred people who took part in a demonstration in Lower Manhattan on December 17 of 2011, when some protesters broke into a vacant lot in Duarte Square in an attempt to start a new occupation. rape-protest-ap-670Punjab teachers to launch protests against police in rape case

LAHORE: Teachers from all over Punjab will come out on streets against the police for not apprehending the accused in a rape case of a teacher’s eight-year-old daughter.

Punjab Teachers Union (PTU) Central President Sajjad Akber Kazmi and other leaders, including Rana Liaquat Ali and Zafar Sandhu, in a statement here on Friday said police, instead of arresting the culprit, were using delay and negative tactics in the case.

Eight-year-old daughter of Zahid Abbass, a teacher of Govt Khawaja Modle Middle School Shahadra, had been rapped in Ravi Rayan area in the precincts of Muridkey police station few days back.

Such an attitude reflected complete failure of the provincial government in maintaining law and order and also exposed its claims towards respect for teachers, they said. More…

Crews expected to return at night to continue removal of 20-metre stretch of wall to make way for luxury block of flats

Hundreds of protesters have gathered at the longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall for an angry standoff with developers who removed a small section of the structure to make way for a luxury block of flats.

About 1.5 metres (5ft) of the East Side Gallery was taken down before protests brought an end to the work as police determined it was unsafe to continue.

A further 18.5-metre stretch is due to be dismantled to allow access between the 36-flat complex and the banks of the river Spree, which flows adjacent to the 1.3km length of wall.

Protesters brought in a mock wall section to try to fill in the gap. Some carried banners, one of which read: “Mr Wowereit, don’t tear down this wall” – an appeal to Berlin’s Social Democrat mayor, Klaus Wowereit, and a veiled reference to a 1987 speech made at the wall by Ronald Reagan in which the then US president urged the Soviet leader: “Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”

Another protester’s sign read: “Does culture no longer have any value?” More…

blog-planb-500x280-v01Native American Women Demand Rightful Access to Emergency Contraception
Imagine being denied emergency contraception after a sexual assault; to not even be informed about the steps you can take to prevent an unwanted pregnancy; and to later find yourself pregnant as a result of the rape.

For thousands of Native American women this is reality.

That is why the ACLU and NACB have filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with Indian Health Services (IHS) seeking information on policies governing access to over-the-counter emergency contraception (sometimes known as “Plan B”) at IHS facilities and demanding to know what steps the government is taking to solve this problem.

Did you know 34.1 percent or more then 1 in 3 Native American women will be raped in their lifetime? Native American women experience sexual assault at a higher rate than all other U.S. populations, which is one reason why it is essential that they have access to Plan B.

According to FDA guidelines, Plan B is available to women 17 and older OTC. If used within 120 hours, EC can safely prevent pregnancy after contraceptive failure, unprotected sex, or sexual assault. But EC is most effective the sooner it is taken, with effectiveness decreasing every 12 hours. More…

Prozess gegen Punk-Rockerinnen wegen Anti-Putin-Aktion geht weitRussia: Free Pussy Riot Members
– Russian authorities should immediately and unconditionally free the two members of the feminist punk group Pussy Riot who remain behind bars.

The two women, Nadia Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina, have been in detention since their arrest nearly one year ago, on March 2, 2012. They were sentenced in August to two years in prison for “hate-motivated hooliganism” based on a political stunt in the area near the altar of Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral.

“Every day these women have been in prison has been an injustice,” said Rachel Denber, deputy Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “The women of Pussy Riot should never have been charged with a hate crime.” More…

DownloadedFileAusterity Triggers Novel Protests in Portugal
A Portuguese revolutionary song from 40 years ago is haunting the bailed-out country’s government.

Anti-austerity protesters are hounding senior officials by loudly singing at public events a celebrated tune from the 1974 Carnation Revolution. They have managed to silence some of their targets, including the prime minister when he was trying to give a speech in Parliament.

At the same time, people are putting the prime minister’s name and tax number on their store receipts. That makes it possible, in theory at least, that Pedro Passos Coelho’s spending will outstrip his official income and leave him liable for an end-of-year tax assessment.

Portuguese unhappy about the center-right government’s relentless austerity drive aren’t just getting mad, they’re getting even — in imaginative ways. More…
