I’ve written before about the fact that there are Americans that still seem to hold onto a secret desire for a Monarchy and all of its gilt and glitter, a sort of royal Big Brother/ daddy/ strong man where life has a set of well- defined rules and regulations; a life in which hard to make decisions are taken by someone else. This someone can be praised or blamed but the decisions right or wrong are theirs. It shows itself here in something as benign as an interest in the British royal family’s ups and downs to electing a man who is “the only one” who can make us “great again”. The fact that this someone just happened to be a white man who lives the lifestyle of a royal just made it more appealing.

Was It Racism or Desire for Authoritarian Leadership That Elected Trump? The Right Answer Is Both
I think this was a big part of it. I also think that all of the other crooked little bits added up to Trump; all of the gerrymandered districts, the voter suppression the dirty deals and blind allegiance to political parties as if they were something akin to a melding of a religion and in the GOP’s case, evangelical, and a sports team that gave us THE DONALD. The biggest factor was, in my belief, right wing big budget media. Call it what it is and was- propaganda straight from Ailes who dreamed it while in Nixon’s employ and successfully built it in the decades that followed.
Sadly this election was nothing new. Monarchies, democracies, dictatorships- it’s pretty much just those with power and those without; those willing to be soothed by promises and lies and those that see the truth but can’t convince enough people to let go of those lies and think for themselves until it’s too late in most cases.
Racism soothes some folks deep inside they need to feel superior to others. That’s pathetic but understandable and if those folks could think, really honestly think for themselves things could get a lot better for all of us. Until we can honestly look in our own hearts and see why we feel how we do; why some need a big brother or must have a group to hate in order to function we will continue to elect people like Trump.
