The news gets worse every day. January in generally is a crappy month; even though my nephew Jordan and I always share a birthday party together it’s still a cold and depressing month. A lot of older folks pass on in January. I guess they hold on for the holidays with the last of their strength. Homeless people freeze to death and the ERs are full of slip and fall and car accidents. Tempers seem to get worse in January. I guess the warmth and goodwill of the holidays is thrown out with the wrappings and tinsel.
This January we have the start of a new political administration, which to say the least, is troublesome.
So, I am looking forward to my favorite day of the year and my annual written tribute to Groundhog Day. Yes, Groundhog Day!
I’ve been to Punxsutawney but it was in the fall. I’d love to be a participant in Phil’s big day there. It’s quite a party but age and weather and the price of a room which has to be booked a year in advance means that I’ll be watching on my television. Still, Groundhog Day is the easiest and least stressful holiday we have. No big preparations, no big meals to buy and plan for, no gifts to be shopped and wrapped. No, just a cute little chubby ground hog, a handful of guys in formal dress and a bunch of folks having a good time. Oh and for the animal advocates; you (and I) should have it so good. Phil is treated like the rock start that he is.
So, I’m ready here at home. I have my little stuffed toy Phil- complete with snazzy top hat, cape and red bowtie. He’ll get an honored spot on my mantelpiece for the day and I will get a smile on my face.
So, I’m advocating Groundhog Day as a Hippie holiday. Rock on Phil!
Peace (and may Phil be shadowless this year)
