I live in Pittsburgh and when the Juncos head back north we smile because spring weather is on the way. The big surprise was a field full of Robins last week. They are almost a month early. So, as much as I am a fan of Punxsutawny Phil, he was wrong again.
There are flower seed packets in the local hardware store and the catalogues are full of springtime things to buy. I take both Mother Nature and catalogues as a big indication that spring is on the way. So now is the time to figure out where to plant the things that will attract and feed birds and bees and butterflies. If you aren’t sure check Google. It’s great for info on your specific area. I know that where I lived before here I had rich black river dirt and anything grew. Twenty some years ago I moved about five miles away and found that I had clay like acidic dirt and there were plants that if they did grow were stunted and sickly.
Even if you can only find room for a large pot or two, think about the birds and especially, the bees.
